It's hot, so minimize the cooking to a dish that is quick and easy!

Well, we are still getting settled into this house, but making good headway and realizing that all of the things we had stored in my parents’ garage for two plus years were a bit excessive. As in, I didn’t miss any of it. I mean, many of my books I missed, but many I did not (I have a book hoarding problem). We are also trying to suss out our farming equipment, and figuring out what to keep, which is honestly emotionally draining and also too boring to write about, so I will spare you the details. It’s just been a process!

Also, this week I have really realized how rural a place this really is, which has been both panic-inducing and interesting at the same time; it’s a fear of isolation, but also, there is something satisfying about it. There are the good parts—there is no such thing as traffic or rush hour in such a small town as this, and we see more wildlife in the roads than cars. But that feeling of oh God, where is everyone? definitely has started to set in during the last few days. (The intentional community here is going through a transitional period, where we are the only ones really here during the week, and there are only three other members right now who live up the hill from us.) We also have not seen any other kids yet, so, that does not make me feel great! However, on a walk back from splashing in the creek so not to burn up in our non-air-conditioned house, a red truck pulled up in our driveway to drop off a plate of cookies with a note attached: “Welcome to Evans Quarry Road! We are your neighbors, Mike and Sue”. The cookies were made with M and M’s and were on a plastic plate with plastic wrap. Mike said he and Sue lived down the road on 400 acres, and told us he had a fishing and swimming pond if we ever wanted to come over. It felt very small-town and Midwestern, and instantly made me feel a lot less sad.

Anyway, besides these cookies, what have we been eating? Moving has been draining, and really, lately, all I want to do is not cook.
